Technology Frequently Asked Questions
What computer is appropriate to purchase for a student?
CU’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) maintains a Computer Purchase Recommendations page, as well as a Supported Software and Hardware List page, with both minimum suggested specifications, as well as high-performance options. At the Book Store, we have some tips to help you through the purchase process:
- Spend more early on – Ideally, your computer should last your college career, or about 4 years. Most modern laptops and Ultrabooks are not upgradeable. For most internal components nowadays, such as hard drives and memory, what you choose when you purchase will be the same for the life of the computer. This means that if you can double the memory in your system for $40, it will be worth it in the long run.
- Get a hands-on perspective –A student’s computer is often the most expensive and most-used tool throughout their college career. As such, it is imperative that it is comfortable and meets the usage scenarios. For example, if you are constantly on the go, a thin and light Ultrabook will be far superior to a gaming laptop with a massive screen. In our Technology department, we have various computer demos on display for this purpose, and we invite you to come play with them to get a feel for how they physically handle. If you’re not local, we encourage you to do the same at your local electronics store.
Where can I purchase a computer?
The CU Book Store does not carry a physical stock of computers. However, pay a visit to our Computers page, which provides information and links to our partners – all of whom provide educational pricing for students, faculty, and staff. Be sure to use your @colorado.edu email address for any and all purchases to ensure the educational discount. Departmental purchases should be made through the CU M@rketplace.
How do I get something 3D printed, laser engraved or die cut?
- 3D Printing: Send us an email with your model to technology@cubookstore.com. We will look over the model and respond with a quote for 3D printing, and ask any questions, such as color, infill, or layer resolution. If all parties are satisfied, we will add the job to our queue and contact you when it is complete.
- Resin Printing: In addition to our standard FDM 3D printing process, we can also print your smaller, more detailed models on our Elegoo Mars resin printer. Just like the standard 3D printing process, you can send us an email with your model or inquiry to technology@cubookstore.com.
- Laser Engraving: Coming soon!
- Die Cutting: Coming soon!

Where can I purchase Microsoft Office?
Please visit OIT’s Office 365 page for instructions on how to obtain your copy.
Should I register my device with the CU Police Department?
Electronic devices are valuable resources which often contain personal information and data which is important to you. Device registration stickers offer a visual cue that can often act as a deterrent to theft. It also allows for easier recovery if it is ever found. You can register your device at the webform that can be found at the CUPD’s Device Registration page.
Why should I purchase technology from the CU Book Store?
